Roster Updates - 2019

Recommended Posts

No, the full update hasn't dropped yet - but it should be any day now.

Per Mark Cohen on twitter, jersey number assignments for newcomers are still being finalized.  He did say, though, that Darwin Barlow will be wearing #24.

I sure hope Cohen has gotten himself in good shape for his inevitable DB role.

Whatever happened to defensive linemen wearing numbers between 50 and 79?

According to NCAA rule book, Rule 1 Section 4 Article 1 "strongly recommends" numbering as follows for offensive players:[2]

Otherwise all players must be numbered 1–99; the NCAA makes no stipulation on defensive players. Two players may also share the same number though they may not play during the same down.

I thought the same thing.

During Patterson's time, we've seen two corresponding trends in jersey number assignments:

-Players care more about their jersey numbers now, and fads (such as the non-traditional one you noticed) have emerged.  I'm not sure what's better about a number in the 30s or 40s for a D-Linemen, but I'm also fairly removed from the culture of teenagers these days. Heck, I wore #80 playing WR in high school back when that was one of the most sought-after numbers at the position.  I'm no 49ers fan, but wearing Jerry Rice's number was pretty cool to me at the time.

-More conservative coaches like GP have relented on things like doubling up on numbers (even though it literally cost us a game in 2013) and non-traditional numbers.

So, young Mr. Tomlinson is probably pretty stoked about his?
