Jerome Pena, according to his post on Facebook last Friday night, has retired from pro ball.

What's his plan now, did he say?

I should've also mentioned Sean Wymer among the strong starts - while he's 0-0 through two starts for Class A Lansing (Blue Jays), he's gone at least 6 innings in both, carries a 3.65 ERA and has 9 K's against just 3 BB.

Good news and bad:

The bad: Brandon Finnegan has been reassigned by the Reds' organization to the Billings Mustangs of the Pioneer (Rookie) League.  So he's in extended spring training for now.

The good: Kevin Cron is 10-for-23 during his current 6-game hit streak for Triple-A Reno (D'Backs).  That stretch also includes 5 walks drawn against just 2 strikeouts.  Through 12 total games, he's hitting .340 with five doubles, 4 HR,  16 RBI and a 1.138 OPS.

-Bryan Holaday went deep as part of a two-hit outing last night for Triple-A New Orleans (Marlins).  Through 10 games, he's hitting .310 with 2 HR, 7 RBI and a 1.108 OPS.

Not sure what the Dbacks are waiting for. That is the definition of tearing the cover off the ball.

Christian Walker, the Diamondbacks first baseman, is hitting .341 with seven home runs. There's no point in starting Cron's service clock to sit on the bench.

Triple-A

  • Kevin Cron (Reno/D'Backs) followed up his 3-HR performance on Thursday by also going deep once each on both Friday and Saturday.  Through 21 games he's now hitting .377 with 11 HR, 33 RBI and a 1.363 OPS.
  • Bryan Holaday (New Orleans/Marlins) has hit safely in 5 of his last 6 games, including a home run last Monday.  Through 14 games he's now hitting .333 with 2 HR, 7 RBI and a 1.063 OPS.
  • Alex Young (Reno/D'Backs) had an outing last week in which he gave up 5 runs in an inning, which darn near doubled his ERA.  Through 8 relief appearances, he's 1-0 with a 6.46 ERA and opposing hitters are batting .323 against him.
  • Tyler Alexander (Toledo/Tigers) is allowing opposing hitters to bat .373 against him, which has resulted in him starting the year 0-2 with an 8.64 ERA.  He does have 16 K's against just 4 walks, though.
  • Jason Coats (Durham/Rays) is mired in a 2-for-20 slump over the last week.  Through 11 total games he's hitting .162 with 1 HR, 1 RBI and a .448 OPS.
  • Stefan Crichton (Reno/D'Backs) tallied 3 K's in 1.2 scoreless innings last time out.  Through 8 relief appearances, he's 0-1 with a 3.68 ERA.
  • Jantzen Witte (Pawtuck/Red Sox) has hit safely in 5 of his last 6, and is now hitting .300 with 5 RBI in 8 games since his promotion from Double-A.

Double-A

  • Durban Feltman (Portland/Red Sox) picked up his first save of the season last time out, and through 7 relief appearances is 0-0 with a 3.86 ERA.
  • Brian Howard (Midland/A's) struck out 6 and gave up just 1 run in 6 innings last time out, but took the L.  Through 5 starts, he's 2-1 with a 1.73 ERA.
  • Jerrick Suiter (Altoona/Pirates) had a 3-hit game earlier this week.  Through 20 games, he's hitting .277 with 6 RBI
  • Taylor Featherston (NW Arkansas/Royals) has cooled off considerably since his hot start, as he's just 7-for-37 across his last 10 games.  Through 22 games, he's hitting .296 with 1 HR, 13 RBI and a .765 OPS.
  • Jordan Kipper (Bowie/Orioles) and Brian Trieglaff (Trenton/Yankees) remain on the disable list and have not played so far this season.

Advanced A

  • Luken Baker (Palm Beach/Cardinals) has hit safely in his last 3 games, including his first home run of the year.  Through 21 games, he's hitting .273 with 1 HR, 12 RBI and an .842 OPS
  • Austen Wade (Lynchburg/Indians) has hit safely in 8 of his last 10 games, including each of the last four.  Through 16 games, he's hitting .241 with 4 RBI and a .656 OPS

A-Ball

  • Evan Skoug (Kannapolis/White Sox) hit his first home run of the year over the weekend.  Through 15 games, he's hitting an even .200 with 1 HR, 3 RBI and a .669 OPS.
  • Sean Wymer (Lansing/Blue Jays) was chased in the 4th inning of his last start after giving up 5 runs.  Through 4 starts, he's 1-0 with a 5.32 ERA.
  • Thanks (+1) 2

I could see Brian Howard getting called up in the next year or so. I bet he's in the A's long term plans.

Jantzen Witte being noticed. I'd just love for him to make the show at least once.

The Boston Red Sox and the curious case of Jantzen Witte

He probably would've already gotten to the majors if the Red Sox weren't so stacked.  Hopefully he will make it eventually.
