Camping Fun

Recommended Posts

OK, everybody participate. Choose four and tell us why.

Mine are toilet paper - for obvious reasons (I'm a girl, after all); tarp - sleep on it, cover up with it, make a tent from it, shade, etc; flashlight - I've got to see where I'm going at night; first aid kit - as long as it's mine, because mine kicks butt. It has everything, including a knife, scissors, matches, and insect repellent.

Rules of 2...you can't go 2 hours without shelter, 2 days of water, or 2 weeks without food.

I'd say tent, water purifier and matches.

You have one more choice.

I would choose only one, but it's not listed...the key to the nearest hotel room.

That's impressive! I hope he was proud of himself.

You're supposed to tell why you made your choices, too.

Tarp because it can act as shelter, poncho, ground cover, weather-proof container, etc.

Knife for killin', cutting tinder, eating food, makeshift spade, crampon, etc.

Rope for making the tarp into a shelter, hang up food off the ground so the bears can't get to it or over a fire so you can do other things while you cook, kindling in a pinch, hangin' outlaws when I get deputized by the local sheriff to hunt bandits and protect fair maidens.

I'd probably go matches because although there are other ways to start fires, they're all really hard.  But then having torn up feet is no damn good either, so that fourth choice is tough.  Also that pot is pretty critical, for cooking, boiling water.  Four isn't enough.

BTW, here is a BSA article on wilderness survival: https://scoutingmagazine.org/2018/08/the-gear-you-need-to-survive/

Impossible to pick without knowing the location. The items you would choose for camping in the middle of the Sahara would be useless if you chose to camp on the top of a mountain or in the middle of a rain forest. Also needed to make a choice would be the duration of the trip.

The most useful items for most scenarios would be the pot and the knife. But in an area with an abundance of obsidian, the knife has less use to other options when in a matter of minutes you can knap a servicable knife from a rock on the ground. If there is an abundance of flint and iron pyrite, matches lose their value. And so on for every item on the list.

Two words that just don't go together, camping and fun.

"Camping" can mean a lot of things, Z. Have you seen the motorhomes and travel trailers they're selling these days? They've got so many bells and whistles you feel like you've never left your house.

Can't afford one of those.  I'm with tcudoc, I need a hotel key card in one of my pockets.

I REALLY wanted to go to Woodstock after it started. Couldn't see how to get there in time.

Greatest fail of my life.
