He left a great literary legacy, and was a blessing to the TCU community. Now on to the green fairways of Heaven, where the ball always veers away from the rough and bounces out of the traps.

Legendary sportswriter Jenkins dies at 89

A recipient of the PEN/ESPN Lifetime Achievement Award for Literary Sports Writing, Jenkins is also a member of the Texas Golf Hall of Fame and the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Hall of Fame.

When then-PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem listed all of Jenkins' achievements, including his numerous writing awards, Jenkins replied: "You left out my cure for polio.''

Jenkins is survived by wife June, sons Danny and Marty, and daughter Sally, a columnist for The Washington Post.

Some good articles about Dan.  The SI obit has links to 4 of Dan's pieces that were included in the collection of their 60 best articles in their first 60 years.

A good read if you can find it is "But Not for Love" by Bud Shrake.  In part, it is a thinly fictionalized recounting of Dan and Bud and their friends time together in Fort Worth before they all hit it big and moved to NYC.  The cover of the book is actually a painting of the house Dan and his wife June lived in back in those days.  The house is still there on Sunset Terrace just west of downtown Fort Worth but east of the Trinity.  If you can't tell, I've always been semi-obsessed with Dan and Bud and Gary Cartwright and those guys.

Sally is his daughter. June is his wife. (I know you know that. Your fingers forgot.)

Enormous loss. Probably my favorite writer of all time. I was always so proud that he was a Horned Frog. RIP.

I loved his writing.  Was a favorite author of mine.

I didn't think too much of him as a person when he was quoted as saying that he wished all Zebras (officials) would contract cancer and die.
