Graduate Transfer QBs

Recommended Posts

There are a few guys out there who have announced a grad transfer who might at least provide some depth and might be willing to take a shot at winning a job here with the injuries to Collins and Rogers.

Christian Alexander from FIU announced a transfer.  He was expected to start at FIU this season but got beat out by a grad transfer from Bowling Green.  When the other guy was injured and had to sit out the bowl game, Alexander led FIU to a win over Toledo with 17/26 for 209 yds and 1 TD and no INT's plus 83 yds rushing on 11 carries.  He has decent career stats but has only started that one game.  https://fiusports.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6677

And both of USF's backup QB's are transferring.  I assume one will wind up at McNeese following USF's OC who is now the head coach there.

Chris Oladokun, USF

and

Brett Kean, USF

So, why declare for the draft then? 👆🏻

Apparently all that "return to college" rec means is that you're not going in the first 3 rounds.  It doesn't mean you're not going to be drafted.  Maybe he's got someone else telling him he'll go between the 4th and 6th round.

There could always be other things at play, too.  Risk of injury.  Not seeing a good fit for transferring.  Family needs/finance.

Jumping early wouldn't be my choice, but hard to question what is going on in his world.

Also. There is a difference between a dude that has already Graduated and kid who is 3 years removed from HS and "leaving early".

Kinda quiet on the Transfer front, everyone waiting for Hurts?

What are the odds he just declares for the draft?

TCU seems to be a logical potential destination and he looks good in the logo.  :)

I mean it makes sense. Maybe I'm just talking myself into it.

We get him, we automatically become a top 10 Vegas odds to win it all next year. IMO

Saw that.  Right or wrong, the idea of him coming to TCU will make me significantly more optimistic about next season.

I don't think Hurts will give TCU much consideration, and I'm not all that concerned about adding a quarterback for next year. But we desperately need a transfer defensive end who can play right away. Someone like Shamiek Blackshear of South Carolina:

or Oluwole Betiku of Southern California:

I disagree about not needing a QB. As of right now, our only healthy QB on the roster is a true freshman who just arrived in campus a week ago. In fact, Duggan will likely be running with the 1's in spring ball. I know Rogers took a couple snaps in the bowl game, but he's still not 100%. I think getting a transfer, even if it's not Hurts, is essential at the very least for depth.

But I 100% agree we need a transfer DE. Not that I don't think our projected starters aren't capable, they're just very unproven and young. That a position we need experience/leadership.

It appears as if Hurts is strongly considering us but Maryland may have the inside edge with the Bama OC Locksley going there.  If he doesn't commit to Maryland on his visit there this weekend and we get him on campus next week, I think we'll probably get him.  I just have a feeling that coming home to Texas and running a wide open Big 12 offense in a conference with suspect defenses will appeal to him.

Maryland is so "meh" to me...

I guess ultimately Hurts wants to go somewhere so he can improve his draft stock. Where that is? IDK, probably OU. Lol.

Josh Gattis is set to join Mike Locksley’s staff at Maryland, BamaInsider.com has learned. After serving as Alabama’s co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach this past season, Gattis is expected to take on the role of offensive coordinator at Maryland.

If I were looking to make a fresh start by changing jobs, I'm not sure my first instinct would be to take a job with a boss who'd passed me over for a promotion at my current job.

But that's just me.

This is what I thought, too.

TCU Horned Frogs

Why it makes sense for TCU: It wasn't long ago that TCU appeared to be overflowing in QB riches. But blue-chip commitment Justin Rogers tore up his leg during his senior year of high school, then 2018 Week 1 starter Shawn Robinson transferred in midseason. Rogers is still working his way back from drop-foot condition after redshirting last year, leaving the Horned Frogs otherwise with incoming freshman Max Duggan and former Ivy League transfer Mike Collins, who himself is coming back from injury, as the only other options. The Horned Frogs are good enough elsewhere to contend in the Big 12. With Hurts at quarterback, they could be serious challengers to Oklahoma and Texas in the conference title race. -- Trotter

Why it makes sense for Hurts: Having grown up in Houston, this would make a lot of sense. He could get closer to home and enter a program he has a lot of familiarity with. It's safe to say TCU coach Gary Patterson and Hurts' father, a high school coach in the state, are acquainted from the recruiting trail. But it's the opportunity to start with Robinson gone, coupled with the style of offense TCU runs, that really gives the Horned Frogs a shot. They've had success with dual-threat quarterbacks before, and they aren't afraid to throw the ball downfield, which is something Hurts must show to NFL scouts. The only question is how Hurts would view the roster strength and the opportunity to be in contention in the Big 12. -- Scarborough

Curveball!

Gattis has instead accepted a job as the new OC at Michigan.
