We need to say to hell with red shirting guys. We need to prepare for next season right now.

With some of these guys, we may be able to have our cake and eat it too.

But if you're burning a redshirt, you also have to think about the impact on the other end.  Some of these guys could end up making big contributions as a 5th-year senior in 2022.

Why would we want to burn red shirts on this season if we think it is a lost cause?  Maybe I'm not thinking about this right, but I'd think we'd only want to expend a year of a guy's eligibility if he's going to help us in 2018.  Unless you think the guy isn't going to stay through his senior year, then maybe you go ahead and burn now to get him the extra playing time.

Of the guys who haven't played 5 games yet, I think the only one who will not redshirt is Hunt.  With Turp gone and Dylan Thomas out for the season, we need him at WR.  Stephens might fit the bill as well but they may wait and see on him.  He can play against K State and Baylor to get to the 4 game max and if we win those games and it looks like he's contributing, they may burn the redshirt.  I think they redshirt Mathis just because it's always good to redshirt offensive and defensive linemen if you can.

In GP's press conference today, he mentioned that we'd be seeing more of Hunt and Stephens going forward - and that neither of them will be redshirting.

On Mathis, he said they are still deciding whether or not he'll redshirt this season.  I believe he can play in one more game before they'd have to decide.

Sorry to ask a stupid question, but does the bowl game count as a game in regards to red shirting?

I'm pretty sure the answer is yes.  Doing some superficial googling, it appears that a proposal was made to not count bowls toward the 4-game redshirt rule but that it was not acted upon.

Well, despite gofrogs.com listing Washington having played in 5 games, GP said in his press conference today that he's at 4 and that they're leaning toward redshirting him.

Good reminder that my list is very unofficial.

Burning T Hunt's redshirt was such a freaking waste. He barely played any meaningful snaps all season. Same with Stephens.

You never know if they were promised game time in recruiting or if we just needed warm bodies in certain places.

Not speaking to specifics but in general if you have a guy who you either project to not keep around or you think will be a journeyman/ depth guy, there’s no reason not to burn the redshirt. “Replacement” level guys are easily replaceable. If a guy has the skills to start now, also no reason not to burn a red shirt unless he’s stuck behind the depth chart. The ones to redshirt are the ones you think have a starter level potential but need development (or health). Especially OL. But there’s value in keeping scholarships fluid so you have more to give year to year.

As demonstrated in a different thread, I don’t follow recruiting. So someone educate me. Did we really not bring in a freshman RB in the last class we could plug in for a game to take some reps off Demercado?

We signed a running back but he didn't qualify academically. And we had Snell, but he quit.

Hindsight is always 20/20:

-Fabian Franklin, who we signed last year, has rushed for 106 yards and 0 TD this year for Coahoma Community College.

-Tazhawn Henry, who was committed but bumped aside in favor of Franklin, has rushed for 341 yards and 8 TDs for Tech.

-Kenedy Snell, who decided to transfer out early this season, would probably be in line for 10-15 carries on Saturday if he'd stayed.

-Ochaun Mathis

-Pro Wells

3 or fewer games (will redshirt even if they play in the bowl game)

-Izaih Filikitonga
