TCU Tennis 2018-19

Cam Norrie didn't automatically qualify for Cincinnati, so he played a qualie round yesterday and lost to Denis Kudla 3 and 4. He'll qualify automatically for the U.S. Open though.

Alex Rybakov (ATP# 655) is currently playing in a qualie round for the U.S. Open against Facundo Bagnis (ATP#165).

Alex is up a break 5-3 in the first set!

5-4.  Bagnis holds.

Alex takes the first set 6-4!

0-1.  Bagnis serving first this set.

1-all.  Rybo survives a break point to hold over the Argentine.

1-2.

1-3.  Bagnis gets the early break...

Alex falls 1-6 in the 2nd.  Ugh.  On to the 3rd set!

0-1.  Serving first, Rybo is broken in a loong 18 minute game, with multiple deuces.

0-2.  Not looking good.

1-2.  Alex holds for the first time in awhile.

1-4.  Down 2 breaks...

1-5.

2-5.  Still alive...

Alex falls 6-4, 1-6, 2-6 and is out of the U.S. Open.  And Reese Stalder lost in the qualies in both singles and doubles at the Memphis Futures tourney.

The U.S. Open main draw has been announced and Cam Norrie (ATP #60) is scheduled to play Gregoire Barrere (ATP# 109) on Monday at 1:15 in the afternoon.  Barrere is from France, he's 25 years old and he's currently at his career high ranking.  They've played once before and Cam won.

That setting and landscaping is so pretty.  That looks like Bertus on the near court - I wonder if Tadeas, Tomas and Jacob are in town yet.

Norrie v. Barrere will be starting in about an hour.  I have to head to work and won't be able to follow it, but will find out tonight how it went.  Hopes are high that this'll be his best Slam yet.

Benedict Brooksby just beat Berdych in the first round.  This is both good and bad news for Baylor - if he does great (he's the only American qualifier), he might just skip school altogether.  But if he goes to college, he could legitimately dominate - he could very well be verging on ATP Top 100 already and is certainly Top 10 if not the best college player as a not-yet freshman.

Cam lost a 5-set 4 hour thriller to Barrere today 6-7 (4-7), 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), 5-7 today at the U.S. Open.  Basically, he fell behind 2 sets and fought back and fought back, but couldn't prevail in the deciding 5th set.  This is decidedly not a good result for him - he's been slumping in the last month or so.  He's still in the doubles though, teaming with fellow Brit Dan Evans, he's scheduled to play Wednesday in the opening round (of 32).

Cam's doubles match at the U.S. Open was delayed until today, but it might be even later because his partner Dan Evans is just now losing to Federer in singles.

After Evans lost huge to Federer in singles, the Camster and Evans beat Struff and Puetz in doubles 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 and have advanced to the Round of 16 at the U.S. Open where they will play Cabal/Farah tomorrow.

Nick Chappell was upset by Christian Langmo (Miami Hurricane) today in the ITF tournament in Cancun.

Commit Tomas Jirousek is apparently not yet on campus, as he's reached the semis in the ITF tournament in Bratislava, Slovakia. He's scheduled to play Russian Kirill Kivattsev in a few hours.

Norrie and Evans lost today in doubles at the Open 7-5, 4-6, 3-6, so that's it for the Camster in the Slams this year.  Kinda disappointing, but he's still in the Top 70...

Tomas lost to Kivattsev 1-6, 7-6 (7-5), 5-7 today in Brataslava.  He needs to get on a plane to Ft. Worth soon (although he might be scheduled to arrive in January).

Not exactly TCU tennis related, but still funny.

Jared will probably know more about this, but it sounds like a pro tennis event is coming to TCU this fall:

FWBP: TCU to be venue for new professional tennis circuit

Nope.  First I've heard of it.  It looks like Oracle is going to be sponsoring a bunch of Futures and possibly Challengers and that at least one of them will be at the tennis center over the  next year.  Oracle, of course, is already heavily involved in tennis - they sponsor fall college tourneys and are major sponsors at lots of pro events already.  Last year, there was sort of a trial run tourney at TCU when there was a non-ITF-sanctioned tourney that a lot of Frogs participated in - it looks like that one did well enough to get Oracle interested enough to place one of their new tourneys at.  This is probably part of the new system that includes Transition Tour events and Futures events and it would seem that Oracle has decided to invest in the Futures portion of that.  This will be cool for TCU - Baylor has gotten a lot of mileage from hosting Futures events; drawing recruits and other players from all around ever since they built their new(ish) tennis center.  (Benedict Brooksby arguably switched last year from TCU to Baylor after getting a wild card there and being feted all week).  I've always thought that TCU's venue is still far better than that concrete monstrosity in Waco so now we'll be able to similarly impress recruits and others.  Futures events typically don't draw all that well but it will be an opportunity for Ft. Worth fans to check out some high level tennis cheaply.

The new TCU schedule is bound to be released any day now, so it's almost time for a new thread and a new season.  I wonder if we'll be going to Newport this season so our Boston-area correspondent can make his plans accordingly.

No schedule released as yet so we'll continue with this thread until Roditi gets it finalized.  Alex Rybakov (now ATP #656) will be back in action at the Cary Challenger tomorrow where he is scheduled to face Michael Redlicki (ATP#350), who is a former #1 player for Arkansas.  Rybo needs to up his game in the Challengers this fall to get back into the Top 500 and beyond.  He's still getting coaching from the USTA from winning that tourney last fall but that's only gonna last for a year.

Sofascore says Nick Chappell is now in Hungary for the Futures tourney in Gyula, but that may be a misprint.

Another site is showing that Nick is in Champaign, IL for the Futures tournament. He's seeded 3rd in the main draw. Reese Stalder is in the Champaign qualifying tourney. He had a first-round bye and is scheduled to play this afternoon.

Rybo v. Redlicki is just starting in North Carolina.  Unfortunately, I've got to go to work, but I'll update when I get home.

Yeah, I thought that was a misprint.  Nick will be playing Siphosothando Montsi tomorrow.  Widow will play Henrik Weirsholm.  Both in Urbana.

Rybo lost 2 and 4 to Redlicki today so it's another Challenger where he goes out in the first round.  (sigh).

Widow lost to Weirsholm 4 and love yesterday in singles but he will team with Nick Chappell and get another shot at Weirsholm and Jeff Richmond today in doubles in Champaign-Urbana.  Nick's opening round singles match against Montsi is later this afternoon.

Nick and Widow won their doubles match in Champiagn-Urbana 2 and 4 and have advanced to the quarters where they will play Montsi and Brown later today.  Nick beat Montsi in singles yesterday 7-5, 6-2 - his next opponent hasn't been determined as yet.

Widow and Chappell lost in doubles today in Champaign 4-6, 6-0, 4-10 in the quarters.  But Nick is still alive in singles - he's now scheduled to play Adam Walton, an Aussie who plays for Tennessee, who made first team All-SEC this past year as a sophomore and has an ATP ranking of #1473.
