Can giant walls protect the USA from tornadoes?

Forget the Great Wall of China… How about the Great Wall of ….. Kansas?

One scientist thinks we can protect parts of the central USA from ferocious tornadoes by building several gigantic walls across Tornado Alley:

"If we build three east-west great walls in the American Midwest .... one in North Dakota, one along the border between Kansas and Oklahoma to the east, and the third one in south Texas and Louisiana, we will diminish the tornado threats in the Tornado Alley forever," according to physicistRongjia Tao of Temple University.

I have found over the years that physicists often are remarkable for 2 things: (1) How incredibly brilliant they can be when operating within their areas of expertise and (2) How utterly stupid--and worse, how unaware of their own stupidity--they can be when operating outside their areas of expertise.

That said, as a psychologist, using the back of my own envelope, it would seem to me you'd want the walls tilted by some amount from straight east-west to be oriented more northwest to southeast across Tornado Alley due to the fact of the prevailing westerlies which constrain tornadoes to go generally towards the east or northeast from the west to southwest. Stupid physicist.

It might not stop tornadoes, but that South Texas Wall would do wonders for immigration reform.

Imagine the horror of beings stuck on a Space Elevator with Elf.

Put one along the border and you'll get some backing.

How computer-generated fake papers are flooding academia
More and more academic papers that are essentially gobbledegook are being written by computer programs – and accepted at conferences

Darn. Now the academics have taught gobbledegook to the computers. Is nothing sacred?

DUMP APPLE!!!

They are wasting your money on sustainability bullshit.

From the NCPPR website whose mission is to "expose efforts by left-wing interest groups to divert businesses away from best practices and into left-wing advocacy."...

"Although the National Center's proposal did not receive the required votes to pass, millions of Apple shareholders now know that the company is involved with organizations that don't appear to have the best interest of Apple's investors in mind.  Too often investors look at short-term returns and are unaware of corporate policy decisions that may affect long-term financial prospects. After today's meeting, investors can be certain that Apple is wasting untold amounts of shareholder money to combat so-called climate change. The only remaining question is: how much?"

And apparently, rsf, Seth MacFarlane is involved in this somehow.  Which both intrigues and scares me ...

One episode will be on the Multiverse.

At least in this universe. We can only speculate what will be discussed in the other ones.

In one it will be in Japanese, in another it will be hosted by dogs.
