  1. Tomas Jirousek just defeated Belgian Tom Pisane 6-1, 7-6(2) in his second-round ITF tornament match in Zlatibor, Serbia. Nick and The Widow are playing now in Fayetteville. Nick took the first set 6-1.
  2. Nick is on the acceptance list for the Fayetteville ITF tourney, as is Reese Stalder. If they haven't withdrawn, they're in the main draw. Former Frog Eduardo Nava is in the qualies there.
  3. Stopped into a pub for lunch today and noticed Alex Young on the teevee as he got the start today vs. the Mets. He left the game after giving up a grand slam that made it 6-0 Mets. Five of those runs were unearned due to an error by Nick Ahmed, who went to high school in the town where I live now and where I'm (no longer) watching the game.
  4. ... we also follow the women's team (somewhat)... I just saw on the Twitter that TCU women's team member Ellie Douglas is into the quarterfinals at the Futures tourney in Redding, CA, after her opponent retired. Ms. Douglas made the main draw as a lucky loser and then promptly knocked off the tournament 7-seed, Quinn Gleason (Notre Dame, pro for a few years now).
  5. Marshall Newhouse signed with the Patriots, in part to fill in while Marcus Cannon is out with an injury.
  6. Another site is showing that Nick is in Champaign, IL for the Futures tournament. He's seeded 3rd in the main draw. Reese Stalder is in the Champaign qualifying tourney. He had a first-round bye and is scheduled to play this afternoon.
  7. Nick Chappell was upset by Christian Langmo (Miami Hurricane) today in the ITF tournament in Cancun. Commit Tomas Jirousek is apparently not yet on campus, as he's reached the semis in the ITF tournament in Bratislava, Slovakia. He's scheduled to play Russian Kirill Kivattsev in a few hours.
  8. Alastair Gray lost in the first round to Charlie Broom (GBR, Dartmouth) in Chiswick this morning, 4-6, 6-2, 3-6. More unhappy news from Novi Sad, as Czech Tomas Jirousek also lost in his first-round match. Tadeas Paroulek has just started his match.
  9. Brandon Finnegan has made two relief appearances for the AA Chattanooga Lookouts in the last week. Three innings, no runs, two hits, one walk, three strikeouts.
  10. Alastair Gray and Jacob Fearnley are at the ITF tournament in Roehampton. Both are in the qualifying tournament. Ali will face Michael Shaw later today, and Jacob is playing Barnaby Smith (texas a&m) now. Jacob won the first set 6-4, but is down a break at 4-5 in the second. Jacob won his match 6-4, 4-6, 10-6, in an upset of the qualifier 7-seed. He needs one more win to reach the main draw.
  11. Cam Norrie is playing Australian Jordan Thompson in the Atlanta Open right now. Cam took the first set 7-6 (3), but just dropped the second set 4-6. Thompson has an ATP ranking of 43, which is his career high, and he's the tournament 7-seed. Cam's ranking has slipped to 54. Thompson knocked Norrie out of the Miami Open back in March.
  12. Rybo and Bangoura got past Dempster and Lovett, 7-5, 4-6, 10-7, and face Brits Jack Findel-Hawkins (North Florida) and Mark Whitehouse (Imperial College London) tomorrow. Alex's singles opponent will be Preston Touliatos (Tennessee). Tadeas Paroulek lost to Melnic today and the drawsheet shows that the opponent of the doubles tandem of Paroulek and Jirousek advanced via walkover, so we've run out of Czechs in Piestany.
  13. Alex Rybakov and Reese Stalder are in the Futures tournament in Iowa City this week. Reese lost in the qualifying tournament and didn't make the main draw. Alex is in the main draw and easily defeated Jacob Dunbar (Richmond) 1 and 2. Reese and Alex are both competing in the doubles tournament with non-Frog partners. Our Czech commits won their first-round doubles match to deposit themselves into the next round. Their singles matches are scheduled for tomorrow.
  14. Andrew Cashner traded to the Red Sox.
  15. Alex is now listed as a wildcard entry in the ATP Challenger in Winnetka, Illinois, and is scheduled to face Aussie Max Purcell (ATP ranking 264) on Tuesday.
  16. Alex Young is scheduled to make his MLB debut tonight for the Diamondbacks in a start at San Francisco.
  17. In other Cancun news, Nick Chappell surveyed past Karl Poling (Princeton), 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. Reese Stalder and Eduardo Roldan were also scheduled today to play in separate matches with their non-Frog partners. (The web scoreboard is unavailable. I suspect it's on the short bus ride from Cancun to the impressive Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza, which the Fractal Frog visited in the early 90s.) In results that I think none of us will endorse, our Czech signees, Tadeas and Tomas, were both bounced from singles in their tournament in Pardubice, Czech Republic, yesterday.
  18. Several Frogs are scheduled to play in this week's Futures tournament in Cancun. Eduardo Roldan won his first-round qualifier, but lost to the qualifying tournament's top seed, Alejandro Mendoza of Bolivia. But the main draw of 32 has three Frogs: second-seeded Gerardo Lopez Villasenor, fourth-seeded Nick Chappell, and unseeded Reese Stalder. All four Frogs are in the doubles tournament. Eduardo is paired with fellow Mexican Juan Ignacio Batalla Diez. Reese is paired with fellow American Grey Hamilton (Ole Miss). Jerry is paired with... fellow Frog Nick Chappell! Jerry and Nick are seeded second. TCU's Czech signees are also active this week, at Pardubice in the Czech Republic. Tadeas Paroulek is in the main draw, but Tomas Jirousek will need to defeat Timo Stodder (Tennessee) tomorrow to qualify.
  19. Cam Norrie is facing Kevin Anderson this morning at Queen's Club in London. Cam started off the match with a break and love hold. Things have gotten more difficult since, but he's still up a break and serving at 3-2 in the first set. Cam didn't give up the break and took the first set, 6-4! The game is now on The Tennis Channel. Cam fought off several break points to even the second set at 2-2. A mention of Cam's TCU connection followed. Still on serve at 4-all in the second set. 5-5. 5-6. Cam needs a hold to get to a tiebreak. Hold achieved. 6-6 and they're into a tiebreak. 5-7 tiebreak. Third set coming up. Cam was just broken for the first time today and it's now 2-3 in the third set. Anderson follows with an easy love hold. 2-4. Hold by Cam. 3-4. Hold by Anderson. 3-5. Easy hold for Cam to get to 4-5, but he has to break Anderson to stay in the match. And that's the match. "Nice showing from Cam Norrie," says the announcer, but he came up short. 6-4, 6-7, 4-6.
  20. The Orioles called last week's trip to Arlington the "Cashner Trip."
  21. Gerardo Lopez Villasenor is into the semis in Cancun.
