  1. I stuck this into the news dump thread, but it really goes here. PressboxDFW weighs in on Briles' hiring: https://www.pressboxdfw.com/briles-hired-and-mount-vernon-evokes-national-scorn/
  2. Annnndd. . . PressboxDFW weighs in on Art Briles' return to high school coaching: https://www.pressboxdfw.com/briles-hired-and-mount-vernon-evokes-national-scorn/
  3. Silvio is from Angola and is therefore too naive to know what was going on? Maybe. The NCAA is still appalling whether Silvio is a pro or not.
  4. I wonder if this AAF thing will get any coverage in the Austin media. Maybe if they hang on until March Madness is done.
  5. Kliff did take the TTech job, speaking of having no sense. Although I suppose he saw the writing on the wall for the A'nM staff he left to go to TTech.
  6. My brother-in-law used to mix Red Bull and Jaegermaister (sp?). Rather than use that mixture to disinfect plumbing fixtures, he drank it. Before he went on the wagon.
  7. Everybody wants Kliff as a QB coach and recruiter. No one but TTech wants him as a head coach. So it seems to me.
  8. ^^This.^^ For TCU to run routine, without a good reason to think a threat to anyone is involved, background checks on kids in school sounds like a plot for a dystopian novel.
  9. Who would coach football at Kansas? without an endowment sized contract, that is
  10. Bailure had 2 coaches on this list. I'm glad the sloppy writer(s) that are responsible for that list overlooked that fine man, exceptional pro coordinator (sarcasm NOT intended), but utterly failed college head coach, Jim Schofner.
  11. They would deserve a better bowl than that one. Particularly if they play well against or even (gasp) win against Arkie.
  12. Agree that this Mac effort is a good article-- no ad hominem snark to spoil a good story well told-- although the bar is pretty low for Mac articles. I haven't deliberately clicked a link to a Mac article in a long time, but this one is worth an exception to my general "don't click" policy on Mac articles. I am not so annoyed with Mac that I won't post a link, although I have been close to that point at times: https://www.star-telegram.com/sports/spt-columns-blogs/mac-engel/article218155995.html
  13. I didn't say Patterson would leave. I said UTx might make a maximum push. If that happens, the fun parts will be: (1) UTx official angst if courtship of Patterson becomes public and he does not immediately say "yes"; (2) message board freakouts if the courtship becomes public; and (3) ShaggyWhateverItsNameIsNow, when those guys figure out that Patterson was seriously pursued and told UTx (and CDC-- he'll be pounded by the raunchier parts of the UTx fan base if he shoots for Patterson and does not get him) "no". I agree that Patterson is not likely to take the UTx job, when it comes open either in early 2019 or a few years later. But nothing is impossible, including the departure of CDC to UTx. That is all.
  14. If OU can't beat UCLA convincingly, the whole B12 will have to wear a figurative bag over our heads. We are already wearing bags over our heads for KU. Could they beat Texas State? If Rutgers is physical with anybody, that will be amazing. RU rolled Texas State last week, but then just about everyone rolls Texas State. If you don't want to see CDC and the Longhorns make a maximum-pressure run on Coach Patterson, root extra hard for UTx over Tulsa. The locals (at least the t-shirt part of the UTx fan base) seem to think Tulsa will be a controlled scrimmage for UTx. If it isn't, the peanut gallery in Austin will be screaming for a coaching change, and the people that matter may move that direction, too.
  15. For those among us that do not subscribe to that august journal, the Austin American-Statesman, I post the following: https://www.hookem.com/2018/09/04/whys-texas-longhorns-fans-keeping-calm-wake-season-opening-loss-nah/?utm_source=newspaper&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=5748533&ecmp=newspaper_email&&iaccess=Mzk0QzcwMTgtRDU0Ni00RDFBLUJGMkEtRjIxQUQzMjg1NDJCfDkvNS8yMDE4IDc6MTE6MTggUE18ZW1haWw= Austin's local paper has changed hands. The brass are gone. A new publisher is in place, with much self-serving fanfare. Meanwhile, I understand that virtually the entire journalist staff has buyout offers from new management. The (by and large very good, even if they are as expected Longhorn homers) sports writers are aging out, and I suspect that the end of the Statesman as anything other than a weekly advertiser-type paper is in sight. Every few months we get a notice that our subscription rate is going up. My wife calls their marketing department, and tells them that our household has been a subscriber for decades, but their rag simply is not a $50 per month newspaper. The marketing voice makes nice (wife isn't when she has this sort of conversation-- she's a telephone customer service agent stressor), and tells her we'll get the teaser subscription rate, that of course falls off in a few months. Then wash, rinse, repeat. She'll get tired of this eventually, I suppose, although I think she likes giving them a piece of her mind. I hate to lose the local newspaper. It''s still the best source, by far, for local news. I'm afraid that won't last, either. I suppose they'll hate to lose us, too.
  16. If Washington runs the table, I suspect they will be thought about, for the top 4. That's the beauty of a loss being early in the season, assuming a loss is beautiful. I suppose that if the Fates decree that you have to have one, early is beautiful, I suppose. Certainly tOSU thought so, the year they lost to VaTech.
  17. I remember a lot of fan board chatter about blocking Baylor from the MWC. I don’t remember what provoked it. We had nasty Baylor trolls back then. And Coach Guy Morriss who hated TCU with a burning passion. But nothing credible. Only wishful thinking.
  18. I think I remember, in the really dark hours for TCU football, SMU promoting a package deal that included them and TCU, to what became the WAC16. I think the WAC(whatever it was) was initially contemplating not getting to 16 members, and TCU may have been one of the last ones in. I also think I remember TCU vetoing SMU for membership in some version of C-USA, before that conference had its best teams, including TCU, leave. After TCU left, SMU took the D/FW spot in that league. Maybe there's is or was some institutional guilt at taking a hand up, and then not offering the same hand up to SMU later. If I remember all of this stuff right. A big "if".
  19. Nope. Never. I hope they they continue to lose to UNT as well as TCU. I’m conflicted when they play Baylor
  20. We should agree to disagree. 2016 is forever ago in Austin politics and civic life specifically where high-level (to the extent a minor bowl is high-level) athletic events requiring public funding are concerned. Before the laughter when Steve Patterson suggested the City kick in for basketball facilities; before the screaming when a carpetbagger soccer franchise proposed building a stadium at Butler Shores. I know Austin, Mr. RSF. Frisco is no Austin. Neither is Fort Worth, at least as far the level of "anti" political uproar that proposing public money for college and pro sports facilities and events would cause, is concerned. I doubt there's been anything in the press here in Austin about a possible bowl game here, since 2015. Dead idea. Or very dormant.
  21. The KXAN article is from 2015. The DMN story is from 2016. Forever ago. No marching in the streets for a bowl game here in Austin. Only a toe-in-the-water from from a hospitality industry mouthpiece, and from the Steve Patterson era at that.
  22. WUT? I've heard no groundswell in Austin for a bowl game. Austin is also a very unfriendly place for sports productions looking for handouts. I assume hypothetically that if a bowl game was played in Austin, they'd play at DKR Memorial. I'm not sure UTx would be all that enthusiastic, either. Not without someone writing UTx a big check, anyway. What minor bowl could do that? And they'd be back in the situation of a game that no one cares about being played in a cavernous stadium.
