This little guy just hatched, and he is the 600th Texas horned lizard to hatch at the Zoo since we began our program. Horned lizards hold a special place in the heart of TCU fans, Fort Worth citizens and the people of Texas at large. While the Texas horned lizard used to populate the state abundantly, today it is considered a threatened species. But we’re working to change that. We were the first zoo in the country to successfully breed for reintroduction. We’ve shared our methods with many partners, resulting in the expansion of the program both in zoos and in releases of offspring into the wild.
