Practice Notes

Recommended Posts

Here's a few updates from practice via 247 (free content):

- Sewo had a big knee injury scare; turned out to be just hyperextended; will miss a few weeks to get back to 100%

- Jonathan Song and the new snapper are really impressing, along with a couple other kickers.

- Hill had his most impressive practice since arriving a TCU; running around taking control of everything on the field.

- Stil working on finding a starter at strong safety; true freshmen LVZ and Wallow have really impressed GP; competition for the SS spot is between those two, Issahaku, and Gaines.

- DTs are very impressive thus far; you can tell we are much more physical at that position now; all the guys we took in the recruiting class were great gets.

- GP very excited about the potential of his young Dlinemen

- GP also impressed with Reagor; says he has tremendous upside.

- Only losing two starters on offense will make it difficult to get the young guys meaningful reps.

- Slanina has really impressed so far; trimmed up and very quick/fast; GP says he's practiced better than he ever has since being here.

Hard to believe that's GP saying so many nice things.

I always figured Song would right the kicking ship if he could ever get healthy. I thought Isahaiku looked good at the end of last season, kind of surprised he hasn't wrapped up the strong safety position yet. Slanina - I recently rewatched the Arkansas game and was reminded he had a great game then. So many things can improve if we just avoid injuries.

Practice Notes (8/9)

- Passing has improved; Hill is throwing the ball better and made some really good throws.

- Receivers have caught the ball better overall, but struggled a bit during the scrimmage.

- Hicks and Sewo did not play in the scrimmage (Sewo has hyperextended knee, not sure about Hicks).

- Ty Summers and Alex Bush getting looks at DE; Summers is seriously pushing for the starting spot (had 4 sacks in the scrimmage)

- Summers and Bush can afford to move to DE because our LB depth is deep.

- Arico Evans has filled the spot of Summers (until Wilson recovers).

- Howard, Evans, Wilson, Dunham, and Douglas all mentioned as to have stepped up and look good at LB; Howard at 215, Arico at 210.

- Cornerbacks have played a lot better

- Still looking for someone to step up at strong safety, but they've gotten better.

- Song (and another unnamed kicker) are about 50/50 right now to take over the starting PK spot. Both still look as good as they did a couple weeks ago.

- Lucas Gravell has been an unbelievable snapper; has made special teams better. Gravel has really come in and been a leader; shown the younger snappers how to act and taught them a lot. Patterson has really raved about him since he's been here.

Thanks for the update! Very interesting hearing about Summers at DE. I like it!

I have mixed feelings about it. If he's just naturally a beast there, that's awesome. But with McFarland, Carraway, and Galaei gone, plus Bowen out for the season, it has me a bit worried that they had to move SOMEONE there. It's also starting to look like Chambers and Overshown just aren't panning out.

Or maybe our depth at LB is looking better than we thought? Summers always did struggle in pass coverage, maybe this is just a better fit for him. Gets you more athletic at DE and LB, simultaneously.

Dude, they're FRESHMEN.  Maybe they should wear a uniform before we declare them busts.  Just a thought.

This is year TWO for them in the program. GP has raved about Bethley and Ellis already and they just got here. Not once have I heard GP call out Chambers or Overshown by name. Never said they're busts, just haven't lived up to the potential/hype yet. Really not a ridiculous thing to point out when two guys at a different position have to come over and beat them out for even a second string spot.

Im definetely not complaining if it helps us get better at that position. I'm just spitballing because it's preseason and dying for college football.

Was this recorded with a cell phone from the early 2000's?

Edit- I thought Reagor was the bigger between he and Manning, had that backwards. He must be VERY good if he's that small running with the 1s as a true freshman

Especially when his competition consists of Nixon, Turpin, Slanina, White, and Austin.

Practice Notes 8/11

- Kenny Hill is playing better. Says he is without a doubt the starter. Said he looks better than he did a year ago. But Patterson also mentioned that he practiced unbelievably last year too.

- Patterson says he has three defensive ends at the moment; Ty SummersBen Banogu and Mat Boesen. He’s looking for the other two. When asked about Isaiah Chambers, Patterson noted that he’s in the race for the fourth and fifth spot, just not in the top three. Patterson says it’s a tie between Summers and Boesen on who will be the starter.

- Patterson says true freshman receiver Jalen Reagor is competing for starting wide receiver spot with Jaelan Austin and Isaiah Graham. Patterson says Reagor, along with his former Waxahachie teammate Kenedy Snell, have impressed him with the way they practice.

- The coach says true freshman Corey Bethley has come on in recent practices. Says he is competing for the starting position alongside Chris Bradley at defensive tackle. Ross Blacklock is third.

- Patterson admitted that Travin Howard could potentially play some safety this season.

- The strong safety position is still one Patterson says they have to play better at. LaKendrick Van Zandt is out and will miss a week.

- Patterson says sophomore Innis Gaines needs to learn the strong safety position better but is becoming more of a student of the game every day.

Shawn Robinson is still the number two at quarterback. Patterson says there is a big distance between him and Grayson Muehlstein.

- Patterson spoke volumes of true freshman running back Kenedy Snell. Says with 10.3 speed he can create a lot of mismatches for linebackers.

- Brandon Ritchie is competing for the kicking duties with Jonathan Song. Patterson says no one has won the kicking job and the one instance he really tested them, he and Song both missed 50-yard attempts.

- Patterson says he hasn’t had this much experience at linebacker since the run between 2008-2010.

- The team will scrimmage on Saturday.
