Week 6 DUSHEE Rankings

For all us glum TCU fans, DUSHEE comes in this Sunday morning with good news. One, despite hanging 73 on WVU, Baylor has fallen out of the top spot, ceding to Lee Corso's alma mater, Florida State. Two, despite losing to Oklahoma and showing only the slightest pulse of an offense, TCU is now on the cusp of the top 25. That's right Frog fans, despite how you feel today, DUSHEE is here to totally blow sunshine up your collective asses and boost your self esteem with participation ribbons galore!

Week 13 DUSHEE

Thankfully, Baylor's performance against OkieSt was just mediocre enough to drop them from the top spot. They are now 2nd behind Alabama. DUSHEE continues to really love the B1G and Marshall. TCU climbs one spot due to the precipitous fall of Ole Miss out of the top 10. End of Regular Season DUSHEE (2017)

Now that Army-Navy is over, the 2017 regular season has officially come to a close.  A Bowl preview is yet to come, but before that, let's sum up the season.   The Frogs   At the end of last season, the Frogs were ranked 50th in DUSHEE, the same spot occupied this year by the Marshall Thundering Herd.  So, based on that perspective, TCU's 14th place finish this year is probably better than most anybody could have expected.  That said, the Frogs did not end the season as stron

End of Regular Season (sorta) DUSHEE Ranking

Well, the college football committee wasn't the only entity impressed by Ohio State's beatdown of Wisco. Remember when Alabama's thrashing of A&M was a historically big DUSHEE score? Much like Perrine's eclipsing Gordon's rushing record (or was it vice versa?) Ohio State's win eclipsed Alabama's(66.40 now) with a PD of 78.55. The Buckeyes were 11 TD's better against Wisconsin than the average opponent was. And with that, Ohio State lept Alabama into first. The Frogs climb to 3rd, Oregon

DUSHEE Week 12 (2017)

DUSHEE still loves the Ojai-uh Bucks and has now moved three SEC teams into slots 2-4.  A playoff final 4 that would be enough to make college football fans in every other part of the country outside the southeast and Ohio vomit.   The Frogs slid yet another spot to 14th.  The Frogs slow trickle down through the standings seems to be due to a general drop in the performance of the Big XII-II as a whole as the conference dropped from the 2nd spot to the 4th spot, passed by both the ACC

Week 5 DUSHEE Rankings

Allow me to apologize in advance. Baylor is the number one team in the land according to DUSHEE. Now wait, wait. ... WAIT! Remember the discussion from the first NMMH blog post. Teams are not well "interconnected," as Sagarin puts it, at this point. Baylor's ranking is coming based on the results of two games, against Buffalo and ULaMon. And because Buffalo put a pretty decent whooping on UConn this week, Buffalo isn't looking as bad (51st) in the rankings as they probably are in reality. Han

Week 11 Rankings

For those of you clamoring for two Big 12 teams in the college football playoffs, DUSHEE has your back. The Frogs lept three spots to 2 and Baylor is up 4 spots to 4th. Ohio State, despite that still really ugly loss to Virginia Tech early in the season has dominated the B1G into 3rd. Frogs now lead the country in point differential. Week 11 DUSHEE (2018)

This week we'll bring the Extra Crispy version of DUSHEE back into the mix because the "Group of 5" made a big splash in this week's Original formula.  And while I'm reluctant to dismiss unexpected teams that rank highly just because they are unexpected (due perhaps to my own biases), this week's rankings have enough of those teams to give me some pause.  Like, say Utah State, who comes in 6th ... yes, 6th ... in this week's Original formula.   Utah State pounded San Jose (effing) Stat

Week 13 DUSHEE Rankings

Some shuffling this week, although not as much as you might expect. At this point in the season, each team has played 8-10 games against FBS competition, so even a big loss (e.g. Baylor to Okie St) doesn't dramatically swing teams, particularly teams at the top and bottom of the poll because the teams are more sparsely populated. There can still be a lot of movement in the middle of the poll because that's where the lion's share of teams are. But it was enough to allow Florida State to pass Bay

2018 End of Regular Season DUSHEE

Army-Navy has been played, closing out the 2018 regular season.  Not to be Debbie Downer, but it has been a turd of a season, both as a TCU fan and a college football fan.  The Frogs, albeit showing some guts in getting through Baylor and Oklahoma State to get to the Cheez-It, had a disappointing season.  Alabama and Clemson are, for the 15th year in a row, the odds on favorites to make the NC game and the underdog challengers are two of the usuals themselves.  Same old, same old.  I don't think

These Teams are Keeping You From a 2013 DUSHEE Poll!!!

As Levi Stubbs would say, this one gonna be short ... I believe I've alluded to this before, but the way DUSHEE runs, every team in FBS must have played at least two games against FBS opponents before any numbers can be generated. Even then, the amount of information isn't particularly robust, but that is the minimum threshold past which zeros are no longer in the denominator and DUSHEE doesn't throw its hands up in disgust and leave the room. So as I track the season, this fact gives a little

Pre-Bowl DUSHEE

I don't know what to do with DUSHEE. Using the old methodology, this year in paticular, good teams from bad conferences seem to be over rated based on destroying their weak schedules, even if they lose to the few decent teams on the schedule. Or use the new methodology and middle-of-the-road teams from highly rated conferences get overrated. So either Appalachian State and Western Kentucky look ridiculous in the top 25 or Arkansas and Tennessee look ridiculous in the top 15. And in both cases, B

Week 11 Rankings -- I've Got Bad News and I've Got Bad News

DUSHEE is a sentient being. He senses the derision and scoffing being heaped on him by certain individuals among the Frog Faithful. He has heard your criticism and feels hurt and defensive. The argument seems to be why and how teams with more losses, in some cases several more and in "weaker" conferences, can be ranked above the Frogs. The answer is that DUSHEE makes no evaluation based on the win-loss binary. It definitively does not view a close win against one of the worst teams in the count

Week 7 DUSHEE Rankings

DUSHEE has decided he has pumped as much sunshine as he can. Unimpressed by TCU's performance against Kansas (TCU's first negative PD of the year at -4.67), the Frogs have dropped to 41. Baylor, despite playing their first decent opponent of the year (Buffalo has drifted back to 65th) and not winning by 50, has creeped back past Florida State into the #1 spot. Kansas State was rewarded with a solid moral victory in the Baylor game with a leap from 53 to 21 and into the 3 spot in the Big XII rank

Musings Going into the 2015 Season

I've been struggling to come up with some blog ideas to pass the time until the beathlessly-anticipated first DUSHEE ranking does come out, marking the official beginning of college football season. This morning, the Google News aggregator passed this article from the Detroit News before my eyes, the audaciously named "Top three things to know about college football analytics" by one Ed Feng, a fellow engineer. http://www.detroitnews.com/story/sports/college/2015/09/18/feng-top-three-things-to-

Week 8 DUSHEE Rankings

I was up until almost midnight serving fries to the voracious throng at the Pitt-Old Dominion game last night, and while I technically did not have a drop of alcohol, nonetheless I feel hungover. New Tweaks to DUSHEE

I can't begin to tell you how many emails I received about not releasing a DUSHEE ranking last week and I heard your pleas and cries. I started playing around with the methodology to respond to the large number of WTF teams this season. As discussed in the last post, I attecked this in two ways; 2) by deemphasizing statistical outliers (i.e., games that are significantly better or worse than the typical performance for a particular team and 2) emphasizing the strength of the opponent. I'll con

Week 10 DUSHEE Ratings

I'm just going to post the rankings here, and then maybe later in the week if I get some time, I'll discuss some particulars of the numbers at this point in the season. Some items which need discussing: 1) The WTF team of 2013, Kansas State, 2) underrated and overrated teams (looking at you Northern Illinois, Fresno, and of course, Notre Dame), 3) a closer look at some specific teams of interest including Baylor, TCU, etc. (I'm open to suggestions), 4) the lack of a non-AQ pressence in the top 2

Week 10 DUSHEE (2017)

We have a new Number 1!!!   After maintaining the top spot since the first DUSHEE rankings came out after week 5, Iowa's shocking obliteration of Ohio State dropped the Buckeyes more than 7 points in DUSHEE score, the largest single team drop of the week.  Despite this precipitous fall, Ohio State only dropped to 2nd in the rankings, behind Alabama, but still a point ahead of Georgia who leapfrogged Penn State into 3rd.  We are now getting to the point of the season where enough games
